The Art Of Schoph

Snowboarder, artist and  sometime swash buckling swordsman Schoph is a man of many talents. We caught up with him at his Brighton studio to get the low down on his latest work and see what he's got coming up next.

All your biographies talk about how music is  a key factor in the way you work, do you have a playlist or certain songs you always work to?

Yeah I'd say music is super important to my work,if not one of the main inspirations to my pieces, from the first initial thought right through to the finished piece.I can be listening to anything I've found myself painting at different times of the day to different music. Right now I'm heavily into the Truckfighters, Torche, The Sword, Baroness, Brant Bjork that kinda deal.

What was the starting point for this current project?

I never look at my art as being a project for me,the current pieces I'll be showing are from a series I've been working on since June named "Blues for the Midnight Sun" rather than working towards shows that are happening I like the idea of working on art over a period of my life I guess similar to a tattoo or diary, the whole series is a continuation till the end of the year.

Do you have a favourite piece from this show and why?

All my art has its own thing going on, I've never really have a favourite, as I'm painting a piece I put all my inspirations and thoughts that are happening right there and then in my life so each piece means the same to me.

How the the collaboration with Lib Tech come about?

I've been involved with Lib for the past year or so as a brand ambassador, I've snowboarded over the past 12 years for several companies and right now been supported by some great brands, right now im in a good place being able to continue building though's relationships through as much through what I do with my art as I did snowboarding. Lib Tech came along and I got the offer, They've always been a brand with the ethos heavily based around art, so it seemed a natural decision to be apart of what they have going off.

What's your favourite project so far?

Project as in art/snowboarding or music? As far as in the past to present day, Dalikfodda the company I started and own with my good friend Thrashmore, then the Shithouse tours were always a up there with my favourites ans touring the alps and Europe with great rock bands and my closest mates. Then as art goes I'd have to say this past summer I travelled out to L.A for my first US show at the AR4t gallery in Laguna alongside the talented Taylor Reeve, it was an awesome experience, friendships were made and good times were had and it was a pleasure to be apart of it all.

Sounds like you've been busy, but in addition to this we here you manage to fit in a few film appearances, what's the deal?

Yeah the film works happened some how ,it's beyond me how ...but hey I guess its summat to tell the grandkids, cool stuff thats happened I guess....... In the new "Sherlock 2" movie which I filmed last oct ,I was this bouncer kinda character and got to be right in the thick of a fight scene ......good times! I also had fun on the Pirates of the Caribbean movie last year. Then this summer I spent most of it on the set of the  new Tim Burton movie which was one of the standouts I've done ...great people and great movie. And at the moment I'm working on another great film, I'm not gonna say what but basically I get to be in a rugby match with weapons. It's ace.

Keep track of Schoph's latest work through Subism and look out for more on The Art of Flight in the next days. All photos by Sam Mellish.
