Tiki Surf 1 Rob Tibbles

Competitors from across the country were greeted with solid six foot groundswells as they arrived in North Devon for the Tiki British Surfing Interclubs, hosted by Croyde Surf Club.

Unlike most surf events, the Tiki Interclubs were fortunate to be blessed with good waves throughout the weekend.

Saturday morning saw sizable waves for the first round of the men’s and junior divisions. The surf was not only challenging the juniors but also some of the senior surfers were finding it hard to lock down any high scores and needing extended paddle out times.

This left the door open for any team to take an early lead. The swell and tide dropped throughout the day, opening up more favourable conditions and allowing the top surfers from across the UK to showcase their talent.

This year saw the introduction of a new team scoring system in which every surfer surfed twice, with their top two scores from each heat counting towards their team scores.

By the end of day one Truro College held off tough competition to take the win the Junior division, while defending champions Croyde Surf Club found themselves in fourth place behind Westward Ho!, Woolacombe and Saunton.

Sunday morning saw some teams short of a competitor or two as the night before had taken its toll, but in two to three feet clean conditions Jordan Reed’s smooth and powerful surfing attracted the biggest scores.

The women entered the water in the early afternoon and made the most of the clean high tide conditions.

Westward Ho! continued their strong performance on Sunday taking out the Men’s Team title. Even the high result in the men’s division could not stop Croyde Surf Club retaining the overall team title.
