New York DJ Luca Venezia, aka Drop the Lime, is a man in demand, but Red Bull in conjunction with his management team, Deadly People, have secured the services of Luca to supply the tunes at the 1-2-3-4 Shoreditch event in east London this weekend...
The 1-2-3-4 is in its third year, having originally started in 2007 and will be taking over Shoreditch Park on Saturday, July 24.
Drop the Lime will be playing the headline set in the dance tent on the day and we caught up with Luca ahead of the event...
Hello Luca. How and where are you today?
I am fantastic and I am in sunny Roma!
Aside from shows, what are your plans whilst in London?
I'm producing music for Yasmin's album on ministry, mixing my full length, and shooting my music video for my album single, Hot As Hell.
Being someone who plays between London and NYC regularly, how would you compare the two scenes right now?
They are completely different yet very alike. Both cities have a strong energy and so many exciting new producers. London may still take the cake when it comes to being at the head of the race of pushing the envelope though.
So, you’re playing 1234 Shoreditch Festival on Saturday. Do these kind of urban festivals exist in NYC in the same abundance as they do in London?
No way! Only recently are they beginning to pop up in NY. Electric Zoo is one, and it was a huge success two years in a row. Until then it was mostly strictly indie and rap. I love that London has so many amazing festivals.
Toddla T and Optimo are playing in your tent on Saturday. It’s an interesting mixture but one that touches a few of your bases. What do you have lined up for your set?
I have always approached DJing as tastemaking party sets... playing things that people love, and playing things that people have never heard of but want to go wild to. I'll be mixing up genres from techno to house to electro to rockabilly to northern soul to dubstep
to booty bass.
Red Bull brought you into 1234, and I know you worked on Red Bull Music Academy in January - how was that for you?
Absolutely amazing! The studio set up here in London is top class. It was like a producer's playground! One day it was me, jesse rose, diplo, fake blood, L_vis 1990, mumdance, tai, Switch and MJ Cole all in one room [laughs].
Bass music seems to be splitting at the moment into various ‘sub-genres’. Being a man of multiple tastes, do you think its important to categorize music so much?
I am a firm believer in keeping labels mysterious. Once something is easily categorized, it has a shorter shelf life. Music is music. I find the attitude and energy to be more important than the BPM or sound palates.
Back to 1234 then, you’re playing the dollop /Vice Dance Stage, are there any artists during the whole festival that you’re going to check out?
Definitely looking forward to Wavves, peter hook and brackles...
Finally, your label Trouble & Bass - what’s coming up?
aaaaaaaaaaaaah!!!! October is my full length and this August is the new AC Slater Calm Down trilogy EP, new single from Zombies for money, Little Jinder Youth Blood Remixes, and a Chicago duo Rob Threezy and Willy Joy EP... very big things this year!!!
Thanks and see you on Saturday!
