Savannah & Sienna Twenty8twelve

Blue skies welcomed the first fashionistas to the opening of the London Spring/Summer 2011 shows in the UK’s capital. Glorious Somerset House on the banks of the Thames was awash with camel coats and shearling bikers – the uniform for the forthcoming five days has clearly been set.

London Fashion Week has attracted inflated numbers this season with staples like Burberry and Christopher Kane being as big as ever while the return of Giles Deacon brought capacity to its max.

This was certainly true at the Felder Felder show. The gothic sisters share their show slot with the charming Hannah Marshall (dubbed as the “loveliest girl in fashion” as overheard from the lips one particular editor sitting up front).

Queues stretched not only to outside the tent but all round the courtyard resulting in a bit of a scramble as the burly security team closed the doors on some rather peeved journalists. The show, however, was delightfully sunny.

Traditionally fans of darker hues and tough silhouettes, the Felder twins produced an array of fun and flirty looks in paintbox brights and girly chiffon.

Next up was Sass & Bide. Again, the designers at the helm is a team of two gorgeous girls – which is something of a theme for London as tomorrow sees the return of the Miller sisters – Savannah and Sienna – to the catwalk. Armed with our straw invitations we trundled into the rehearsal rooms of the Royal Opera House to see their latest collection.

I am afraid that I spent rather too much of the show fixated on the front row ahead of me rather than on the clothes themselves but on the brief occasion that I managed to lift my gaze from the beautiful and stylish Poppy Delevigne and the daughter of fashion royalty, Julia Restoin Roitfeld, the S/S2011 collection was refreshingly natural compared to its often excessively-embellished predecessors.

PPQ was its usual hotbed of celebrity activity. Still slightly distracted by my girl crushes at Sass & Bide, I found myself equally transfixed by Paloma Faith, Jamelia and Michelle Williams adorning the bench upfront. There is always a sense of the rock ‘n’ roll but this season the PPQ girl seems to have grown up.

Slightly more 50s rebel than modern punk, the collection opened with jewel colours and ruffled necklines and ended with a fresh neutral palette – almost hailing Riviera chic.

If day one is anything to go by, Spring/Summer 2011 is set to be a bright one.
