Hunstanton BKSA 1

Five times world kitesurfing champion Aaron Hadlow was a welcome guest at the BKSA Hunstanton National Freestyle event, which took place at the weekend.

Even Hadlow could not influence Friday's weather on the north coast of Norfolk though, as the strong sunshine and still conditions meant no wind, but the day wasn't a total write-off, as the competitors repaired to some nearby stake ramps.

Many of the athletes have a skateboarding or BMX background, so an enjoyable day was had by all, despite the unsuitable climatic conditions.

Saturday dawned with more competitors registering for the event, taking the total to 43. The wind was strong until the rain came in, however once the showers had abated the wind picked up to 25 knots allowing the event to get underway, finishing at 6.30pm when some great bands played on the Hunstanton seafront.

Sunday began windy but wet and the day's proceedings started at 1pm with fierce competition in all categories and the rain did not let up.

In the Pro’s division there was a great display, with Ali Barrett from Lytham St Annes coming in third and UK number one Lewis Crathern, who had a difficult last heat, coming in second. Sam Light from Hayling Island really enjoyed the lighter gusty winds and put in 10 moves to win the Pro Divison.

In the Pro Ladies, last year's runner-up Helen Thompson from the Island of Tiree had a bad start and topped it off by breaking a finger, which required a trip to hospital.

Last years Amateur Ladies winner Hannah Whiteley took the honours ahead of Nicky Rudd in second and Thompson in third, despite her injury.

All of the amateur men and ladies did particularly well in difficult conditions, with some outstanding riding from James Boulding who had many pros hoping he does not move into their category next year!

The Juniors had a great competition with 14 taking part and Jack Shoulder claimed first place for the second time this year.

In the Seniors, Peter Whiteley with a strapped ankle, who was not expected to ride took top place with some big moves against speed racer Dave Williams, with local John Matthews in third.
