Hailing from Streatham, Steve Bishop started his musical journey at the tender age of 14 during the late 90s garage explosion. Steve would head to a record shop on Mitcham Lane owned by Megaman’s (So Solid Crew) uncle to purchase dubs by Paper Money Records and white labels appearing on Sidewinder mixtapes. His garage addiction got out of hand when he used to bunk off school to score tunes by east London Pay As U Go Cartel and Eskiboy. Sorry Mrs Bishop!
It was during his teenage years that Steve got to know his dubplates intimately, beat matching at 140bpm and exploring the darker side of garage with one ear on the emerging sounds of early dubstep and grime.
Steve’s first radio slot was at Hammersmith lock up React FM run by Heny.G and friends. Appearing with microphone ally Asbo, the duo would murk the airwaves with a selection of garage and new sounds from the underground. After their radio sessions, Oneman and Asbo would play at bass focused illegal raves around the capital including House Party where he would mix dark garage with future sounds and dubstep.
It was only a matter of time before Oneman was approached by weekly dubstep social FWD>> to play the opening set. After FWD>> Steve was asked by DMZ to play the closing set at their Brixton Mass party. This is where he caught the ear of Loefah who nominated the selector to be part of Mary Anne Hobbs’ Generation Bass 2008.
From Generation Bass to Rinse 11, the now Rinse resident put together a mix for their spring 2010 CD with a selection that complimented his ability to meld the old and the new drawing for heavy weight tunes by Martyn, Zomby, Bok Bok and more. Also in 2010 Steve took his passion for new sounds and turned it into the 502 label pressing up tunes for new talents Fis-T and Jay Weed.
At Notting Hill Carnival Oneman will go back-to-back with Jackmaster. The duo once played a three-hour set at the top of a 1800 metre mountain in an igloo! Oneie’ has also played back-to-back with Jamie XX for the Young Turks x Fact Boiler Room take over where they cruised through musical history: From disco into Four Tet remixes, arriving at grimey licks and dirty electro tracks by Instra: Mental. Expect a set full of retro surprises!
