Jazzin' it up

Thursday, March 11 sees the fifth anniversary of Breakin’ Boundaries in London in aid of Oxfam International and flying in especially to MC the event is Jazzy Ivy.

For those unfamiliar with the scene, Jazzy (pictured above) is best known as the cultural leader and ambassador of Korean hip-hop. Here is what you need to know about Jazzy Ivy…

Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, he spent his youth listening to multi-genre, multi-generational music, particularly of African origin.

He developed a literary gift during his childhood, when he would write short stories, poems, speeches, and so on. As time went by, he realised that becoming an MC would be a great way to freely express and share his ideas and thoughts to bring about changes into the world and he soon became an influential figure in Korean hip-hop community.

In 2002, Jazzy caught his first break, by participating in a compilation LP before collaborating with DJ Soulscape on the latter's instrumental album Lovers, where Jazzy enhanced his reputation as one of the underground’s best lyricists.

In 2004, his first solo EP, Incognito Virtuoso, was well received by the press, which raised his profile yet further and two years later, he released two of his singles Jean and Andy and Mind, Body and Seoul, along with his first full-length LP, Green Tour.

He now hosts the vast majority of important B-boy jams that take place in Korea and occasionally overseas, such as, the R-16 Korea, I.B.E. 2008 Holland, Circle Prinz Korea, Freestyle Session Korea, Battle of the Year Korea, the UK B-boy Championships and many more.

On December 6, 2008, Jazzy was appointed as the Zulu Nation Korea Leader, with the blessing of the supreme world council as well as the father of hip-hop, Afrika Bambaataa.

Jazzy will be introducing dance battles and shows featuring the top eight breakdance crews in the UK (inc. Soul Mavericks from the UK B-boy Championships & BBC’s Ballet Boys), and stars from every continent will compete against each other to help raise money for charity.

The event takes place on Thursday, March 11, 2010 at Tutu's, Kings College, Surrey Street, WC2R 2NS and tickets for Breakin' Boundaries are priced at £7 in advance or £8 on the door, available from KCLSU Student Centres and www.kclsutickets.com.
