The Billabong Pro in Jeffreys Bay is coming up next month which just so happens to be held on Jordy Smith’s favourite wave. We catch up with the South African star of surf, song and now the big screen.
Hey Jordy, what are you up to?
I just came back from a trip to Mexico with Dooma, Wok and Michael Thomson where we surfed some great point breaks. Waves were going off the Richter Scale.
Where are you off to next?
JBay
What are you going to be getting up to there?
Surfing the event (the Billabong Pro, stop four on the ASP World Tour) and doing a little cameo in a movie.
When are you planning on arriving at JBay?
I have set my sights on mid-July, but if the swell is pumping, then I am coming sooner.
Do you have any special boards for JBay?
My JS 6’2” and a 6’3”. Same as always.
What was your highest placing at the Billabong Pro in JBay?
Semi finals in 2006, but personally I just love surfing JBay and being at home with friends and family.
You’ve got a place there. Where is it and does it have a view?
It’s a nice little spot on top of the hill that my dad and I renovated. We’re really fortunate in that we’re overlooking the whole bay. We can see a bit of the Supers and all of the Point with views all the way down to the dunes and mountains that gives an awesome view as the sun rises in the mornings.
So that’s the view, what’s your pad like inside?
It’s a double storey with four rooms en-suite, two lounges, two kitchens and a kitchenette for the games room when my mates pull in for a game or two. My dad just built and enclosed the indoor braii (barbecue) area, which leads into the downstairs lounge and keeps the house warm in winter.
Jordy Smith 2010 World Champ. Does that sound good to you?
That would be nice! For now it’s just about having fun and keeping my eye on the ball in trying to achieve my goals.
You’re mates with Owen Wilson?
Owen is a classic guy and pretty good at football. We also had a tennis match a few months ago. It played out quite even until he had to split for an interview right when I called out on my breaker points (Ha! Ha!).
Are you shooting any new movies right now?
Always shooting whenever I can. I love getting new clips and I have something up my sleeve for late 2011.
You went snowboarding recently.
I had a great trip this year to the Red Bull team house in Mammoth, California. I was snowboarding down some sick slopes and it was hair raising. It was my first time on the slopes and I was figuring out a few airs and turning into thick powder. It was great fun!
