Major Lazer Sound System: What the DJ's Played

Drop the Lime at Carnival Red Bull Company LTD

This bank holiday weekend was epic! Not only did we have reggae legend Lee Scratch Perry collaborating with future sounds men Major Lazer in the London Studio, we were also treated to a host of exciting DJ talent at the Major Lazer Sound System stage. Reggae legends and beautiful booty shakers came together for one epic party under the Westway on Portobello Road.

The day was forecast for rain but Buenos Aires tropical mixer, Douster bought the sunshine with a selection of booty bass joints and Baile funk. RBMA alumni and dancehall mash up specialist Poirier jumped on the buttons to play a set that was perfect for the sunshine.

UK garage renaissance man Sticky killed it with joints like Lady Chan’s Sticky Situation, garage classics by MJ Cole and Lethal B’s, Pow. Sticky’s energetic set was matched by New Yorker Drop the Lime who played a bi-polar mix of 50s jive swing and energetic bass music - Chuck Berry danced toe to toe with Lime’s Sex Sax tune. This guy has the ability to rock your mum, dad and hipster cousin.

Bristolian, Joker played a party dubstep set with old skool joints by Mr Ozio and tunes by south London’s James Blake. Serving up a set with lashings of wobble a la Trolley Snatcher and THE tune of carnival 2010 Katy B’s chart smash On a Mission. Joker got the crowd excited for the arrival of the original hype man, Mr David Rodigan

The gentleman rudeboy stole the show with his infectious energy and passion. Sounding out everything from jungle, reggae to a custom dub plate of the haunting Breakage tune Hard featuring Newham Generals. When Rodigan drew for Major Lazer’s Pon De Floor drinks were flying and 1,500 ravers rocked out. David reached deep into the hearts of reggae lovers with a five minute tribute to Sir Bob Marley. Completing the set with a karaoke style sing-a-long to Johnny Cash’s Ring of Fire. This set was testament to why he has been in the game for over 30 years.

Headliners Major Lazer approached the decks suited and booted ready to blow carnival away with a selection of jump up and dancehall tracks. Starting the set with the UK funky smash I’m Fly by Donae'o, along with the Major Lazer remix of the Gyptian smash Hold Yuh. Things got dangerous when serial daggerer’ Skerrit Bwoy rushed the rig dancing and mcing to the sound of Vybz Kartel’s Clarks. The crescendo reached its peak when reggae legend Lee Scratch Perry took over the stage to the tune of their recent London Studio collaboration, and a live rendition of Perry’s cult tune Chase the Devil.  After the weekend this Duo had been through - emotional meetings with reggae heros Lee Scratch Perry and Rodigan as well as throwing one of the best carnival parties, it was only right to end the set with Burial’s Archangel.
