My London - Andrew Weatherall

The third episode of Red Bull Music Academy's 'London Belongs To Me' is a journey through the UK's capital with none other than Andrew Weatherall...

Dressed like an Edwardian gentleman and sporting the sort of tache you could lose a badger in, Andy Weatherall cuts an unlikely looking figure as a dance music icon.

His credentials, though, are impeccable. Alongside club DJ Terry Farley, he set up legendary 1987 acid house magazine Boy’s Own, his production on Primal Scream’s seminal Screamadelica album lit the touchpaper for indie-dance and his releases and remixes as Sabres Of Paradise and Two Lone Swordsmen pushed the boundaries of electronica. Weatherall is a truly uncompromising original and one of the few DJs whose set can join the dots between psychobilly, minimal techno, cosmic disco and punk.

His new solo album, A Pox on The Pioneers, has just been released, and we took the opportunity to get a personal history of London from one of the capital’s most cutting edge DJs.

For this episode of London Belongs To Me We start at the National Gallery, and Andrew remembers the time he first came to London to see the Clash play, hitching a ride with the Slough Socialist Workers party coach trip. We visit the Cross Bones graveyard in Borough, an unconsecrated graveyard going back to medieval times. The trip takes in stories of Andrew's first tattoo and the reason he got chucked out of his parents house, as well as running the Sabres of Paradise label above a strip club in Soho. Music includes Primal Scream, The Clash, The Psychedelic Furs, as well as some early skiffle, some rhythm and blues and tracks from Andrew's new album.

Previous curators for the Red Bull Music Academy Radio series London Belongs To Me include ambient pioneers The Orb and renowned dubstep producer Mala (Digital Mystikz). Check them out at the links below. Details of the next show coming very soon...
