Introducing electronic outfit Night Angles recently announced they will be releasing an EP this spring with Moshi Moshi sub label Tender Age. Last week the duo came to the studios to rehearse for their live show and we caught up with Tim Eve to find out what inspires him in the studio.
How long have you and Lawrence been working together?
Tim: Lawrence and I have been doing live gigs for about three years and previous to that I was on my own.
Talk us through your studio process?
Tim: We bounce ideas off each other, predominately I write the stuff and then Lawrence and I work out the live side of things. There’s a bit of collaboration and we DJ together.
There is something extremely visual about the music you guys create, do you draw on any visual stimulus to make tunes?
Tim: I did a BA in photography at Brighton uni and I’ve worked as a freelance photographer. I think it effects the way I think about things and quite often with music it comes from a visual starting point. There are a lot of parallels between music and film. I go back to a few films for inspiration; I went through a massive Bonnie and Clyde (1967, Arthur Penn) phase when I was at uni and made some work based on it. It’s all this unexpected stuff that happens, when actually it’s all really expected, but it still takes you by surprise.
Did you make the video for your last release Aerodynamour (Force Majeure)?
Tim: The video was made by a good friend of mine called John Lawrence who is a video artist and studied at the Royal Academy. He does a lot of work with sound imagery. We were housemates for a while and through the gradual process of hearing stuff coming out my bedroom for months and months he kind of got where I was coming from. He also did some visuals for us at Green Man [festival].
You played on the London Eye for RBMA Revolutions In Sound, how was it for you?
Tim: It was amazing and kind of weird, some of the other pods were going totally mental - it was a slightly different vibe in our pod. It was perfect to play our stuff in there and look out over London at night time with 18 people.
Who are some of your musical muses?
Tim: I’ve always been a fan of Daft Punk, Talking Heads, David Bowie, Prince and as I got a bit older I really got into house, especially old Chicago stuff. As long as it has certain elements that work for me, that’s it. I think people get a bit obsessed when it comes to what genre of music they’re into.
