Britain’s most balanced boarders will be flipping in and out of various UK cities in October and November 2009, looking to be crowned this year’s Red Bull Manny Mania champ.
So what’s it all about? Over recent years manual tricks have risen in popularity and this technically difficult area of skating is slowly getting the recognition it deserves. For the uninitiated, imagine doing a nose or tail wheelie (‘manual’) on a skateboard, but building that already tricky move into a show-stopping combination on an original manual pad configuration.
Now put those moves into a contest with a jam session format, giving the boarders a chance to develop their runs naturally. This is key to the art of manualling – it should be a series of free flowing moves that look and feel effortless. Drop some of the country’s best boarders into the mix alongside talented amateurs and you have the recipe for an intense session that culminates in the Grand Final in London on Saturday 28th November.
The competition will have four initial qualifiers with the top four riders from each session progressing through to the Grand Final.
The competition promises to be hotter than ever with the inclusion of the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. They will also be holding four feeder sessions with one skater qualifying for the London Final from each.
UK skater Kris Vile says: ‘It’s nice to see some creative thinking in the competition scene. Red Bull Manny Mania will give people the chance to bring their manual skills to the table and show them off. Plus I’m stoked Ireland are in on the action this year. I’m sure they’ll bring a big bag of tricks along with them to the Grand Final in London. I can’t wait.’
