GLASGOW CROWDS WITNESS RECORD BREAKING RACES ON THE WORLDS SMALLEST VELEDROME

Glasgow welcomed Red Bull Mini Drome to The Old Fruit Market on Sunday 2 October 2011 where hundreds of spectators gathered to get a taster of the World's smallest velodrome in action.  Fixed gear riders from around the world took part in the timed challenges with some riders reaching speeds over 20mph. This was the first time the event had been held in Scotland, the second time in the UK.

Each of the 64 entrants had to face the extreme challenge of the purpose built track which measures a tiny 14 meters in length. Each rider had to complete 10 laps against the clock in the qualifying round, with the 32 fastest riders then entering into the single pursuit knockout stage.  The fastest heat was well and truly earned by Toms Alsberg from Latvia, who broke a Red Bull Mini Drome world record, with a time of 33.555 seconds.

Alsberg said "The Red Bull Mini Drome was brilliant, it was really amazing. I loved riding here today. The final wasn't so easy as the local competition were really strong but I loved every minute of the event."

The Red Bull Mini Drome is engineered by Velotrack, the team who built the velodromes for the Atlanta Olympics and the Delhi Commonwealth Games. The track measures 25 metres in circumference and is 1.8 meters wide.
