Every artist has been handpicked via a rigorous application process to ensure they bring something unique to the Academy. Once inside, they will get the chance to collaborate and cultivate new sounds, not only with their peers, but also with some of the industry’s most prolific pioneers and skilled specialists. Already confirmed as Academy team mentors are DJ Zinc, Stone’s Throw’s James Pants, Mala, Lil' John (Buraka Som Sistema), Robin 'Hannibal' Braun - best known as half of the Danish duo Owusu & Hannibal and Karen P, producer and galvinising force for Red Bull Music Academy Radio.
DJ Zinc, who will be one of the staff members at the Academy enthused; ‘The energy that comes from putting the participants in the Academy studios with the lecturers is amazing and unique. Looking back on some of his experiences at the Academy, he added; ‘As for one special moment at the Academy, there are too many to choose from! Maybe when Goldie played 'Inner City Life' - you could have heard a pin drop. Or the Mizells talking about their experiences. Or Sly and Robbie doing a lecture hall concert. Many, many special moments....’
Each day the students will be joined by an elite list of lecturers who will share their wisdom and experience with the academy participants. Past mentors have included such legendary figures as, Chuck D, ?uestlove, Bob Moog, Arthur Baker and Gilberto Gil, and this year will prove no different. From sitting on a couch chatting to Carl Craig about the birth of techno to dropping in on M.I.A. discussing how to make it all happen - it’s those stolen moments of musical direction that makes the Academy so unique and special.
While the Academy is a once in a lifetime opportunity, it also gives those attending a great platform to grow and continue their musical progression post-event. Past participants have included Kanye West’s protégé Mr Hudson, DJ/ producer Hudson Mohawke, Parisian synth magician dÉbruit, grime/dubstep artist GoldieLocks and producer/DJ Flying Lotus.
The UK crew and the rest of the world will decamp to a specially-built studio complex in the heart of London, where they will be housed in one of the most spectacular recording spaces in the world. Each attendee will have access to state-of-the-art equipment and an opportunity to learn from some of the best in the world.
While the Red Bull Studio will embody the home of participants’ aspirations, the city of London will provide a rich backdrop of musical inspiration to fuel their creativity. Its unique, non-stop energy provides a constantly evolving musical scene, ensuring its place at the forefront of global musical and cultural movements.
