With military aircrafts from all over the world and some of the world’s leading aerospace companies on site, the Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) regularly attracts up to 170,000 spectators. This year, we sent Red Bull Reporters Marcus Chippindale and Dean West to find out more.
Few events offer the same diversity that was on show at RAF Fairford when the Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) erupted in a crescendo of Spitfires and Hawks over the quiet Gloucestershire countryside.
Drawing spectators from around the country and military aircraft from the other side of the planet, RIAT delivered a first class exhibition of static and aerial displays which left everyone in attendance delighted.
In amongst the military aircraft and exhibitions stood Red Bull Air Race pilots Paul Bonhomme, the reigning world champion, and Nigel Lamb of Team Breitling. No strangers to the sort of fanfare that goes with an event like RIAT, the two Brits brought their racing airplanes to Fairford as part of the static display and to meet fans of the Air Race.
The 2010 championship is coming to a close sooner than expected following the cancellation of races in Portugal and Budapest, meaning that the title will be decided next month at Germany’s EuroSpeedway in Lausitz.
For Bonhomme, who leads the championship by five points from Austrian Hannes Arch, the cancelled races appear to have given his title chances a boost as the chasing pack now need a minor miracle to knock him off the top spot.
The above is a sample of Marcus's written report from RIAT. To read the rest of the article and see Dean's photographs, head over to http://www.redbullreporter.com/2010/07/red-bull-reporters-take-off/
