24th & 25th September 2011 saw the inaugural Red Bull Weekend Warriors hit the the Rhyd Y Felin Forest range where Gee, Rachel & Dan opened up their ‘backyard’ to 12 teams of four riders for a weekend of good vibes, banter and some seriously challenging downhill.
The first day saw the twelve teams get a quick briefing and split into two groups before being swiftly uplifted to the start of two prepared tracks, where Gee and Dan led performance sessions, sitting runs and offering guidance throughout.
The evening saw a change of pace but events soon gathered speed, with Ukulele duo ‘The Grand Old Ukes of Yorkshire’ performing a covers set with Piñatas smashing and dance floor action to follow. Special mention here for the Bolton ‘Northern Collective’ who won the crowd and filled the dance floor, with their DJ skills.
The climax came with race day on Sunday and Atherton Racing were the team to beat, with Dan and Gee leading from the front accompanied by honorary team member Rob Warner and Head Mechanic Stevie Bell riding in replacement of an injured Rachel. The competition format meant that each four-strong team had to work collectively to accumulate the fastest time over the two tracks within the two allotted 3hour sessions.
‘Track 1’, a favourite on the British National Series calendar, was well bedded in and ran quickly allowing most riders to clock up to 5 timed runs in the morning session, whereas the recently installed ‘track 2’ presented a very different challenge, the fast flowing rhythm section at the top was very physical, leading to a steep, boggy and rutted section through the woods below which saw many a rider separated from their bike, runs were fewer and times slower as a result.
Atherton Racing were simply unbeatable on the day, but Rachel was pleased to announce that ‘Kerswell Homeboys’ had taken the win with their accumulative times coming in less than 6 minutes off Atherton Racing,next up were ‘Southwest Shredders’ who took 2nd and ‘ManManManWoman’ in 3rd place.
