Sam Lamiroy on the rules of surfing Red Bull photofiles

Britain's top male surfer, Sam Lamiroy, progressed through to the next stage of the Coldwater Classic as a little piece of history was made in Scotland.

Besides Lamiroy's impressive display, Scottish surfer Chris Noble also became the first local competitor to come through the opening round of the Coldwater Classic Scotland.

“It’s only the first round but it feels like I won the event or something!” said Chris, who finished top of his heat ahead of Brazilian Ricardo Dos Santos.

After a relatively warm start at the northernmost post for professional surfing on the first day, temperatures dropped significantly on the second.

One man not affected by the cold was Lamiroy – the native of Newcastle is probably used to lower temperatures than many of his rivals!

Lamiroy edged out Chase Wilson to win Heat 11 and secure a safe passage to the next round, a round the organisers hope will be staged at Thurso East.

With the swell having dropped off, the Round of 128 was completed in smaller conditions at Brims Ness but the weather is forecast to pick back up again on Thursday.

The event runs throughout this week, with the final scheduled for next Monday. For more details, and the latest on the weather, hit www.oneill.com/cwc
