Shaun White and Iouri Podladtchikov grabbed Winter X Games gold and silver in Snowboard Superpipe last night, making Shaun the first in WXG history to win three consecutive gold medals.
Shaun took a gnarly digger in practice, coming up short on a double McTwist 1260 and smashing his face on the lip of the pipe. The crash looked particularly nasty, blasting White’s helmet into the air, but he didn’t let it turn into a setback.
He charged out of the gate in run one, throwing a giant method, a double cork 1080, Cab double cork 1080, and a frontside 540, landing the double McTwist and finishing with an alley-oop backside rodeo. His run-one score stood for the rest of the night.
Switzerland’s Iouri Podladtchikov came close, posting a clean and energetic run with four 1080s in a row, two of them double corks. It was the first time Iouri had landed two double corks in competition.
Japan’s Kazuhiro Kokubo completed the podium with the bronze medal, but Greg Bretz was hot on his heels in fourth. Bretz was clean, smooth and stylish, landing a double cork, multiple 10s and a buttery frontside 1260.
