Mark Webber reckons there’s plenty left for spectators in the 2011 F1 calendar – even if the championship is over...

Despite team-mate Sebastian Vettel having all-but secured his second title, Red Bull Racing’s Mark Webber reckons the season still has plenty to offer, pointing out the races in 2011 have been as thrilling as the battle for the championship has been dull.

“I think there’s a few drivers that would have loved for it [the championship] to have gone longer,” says Webber. “He [Seb] has a chance this weekend but I don’t think it’s important where it happens because it’s going to happen, it’s just a question of which race: here, Japan, Brazil, whatever.

“He’s had a great year. Lots of victories and everybody else scrapping around for podiums. That’s the way it’s gone and it’s a completely different championship to last year where the racing and the championship were very, very exciting. This year, the racing is even better, the championship is boring.”

'I think the racing’s been enjoyable for all of us – the fans, the media and us driving the cars.'

So what’s left in the season for the fans. “I think enjoy the racing!” he said unequivocally. “If you looked at the highlights package you wouldn’t think that someone has run away with it like Seb has. I think the racing’s been enjoyable for all of us – the fans at home, the guys in the media and us driving the cars – and that’s what the fans can look forward to over the last six races.”

While Red Bull look like being in good shape for this weekend’s Singapore Grand Prix, everybody is emphasising the importance of a good qualifying session and getting off the line well. Despite dominating the season, the RB7 has been a notoriously bad starter. Webber agreed that it is a matter of some concern for the team.

“We’ve seen the Ferraris do quite well of the line - Fernando jumping the row in front at Monza, for example. If you lined us up next to the Ferraris, and gave us 10 starts each, your money would be on them to edge it at the moment.

“Last year, I was pretty consistent, this year hasn’t been quite so good and obviously it’s an area we - and Renault - need to respect and do better with. Eventually it’s going to bite you in the arse.”
