Our resident Cold Water Classic surfing blogger Sam Lamiroy sends us the latest inside track on events at the series’ second stop in Scotland.
Welcome to my first blog instalment from the ‘frozen north’ that is the O’Neill CWC series, stop number two… Thurso.
Actually, it’s been ridiculously warm, my face has been totally burned and I haven’t even had to resort to my thermal underpants… I know, what a pity!
My journey up here was pretty exciting. I left Tasmania, the first stop of the series, less than a fortnight ago, flew to Bali, picked up my wife Hannah and little man Huxley there – we had spent a couple of great months on the island of the gods over the winter, but I went to WA and Tassie on my own to get a quick contest fix!
So, off we flew to London, drove eight hours home to Cornwall where I had two nights in my own bed, the first in six months! Then it was up at 5.30am to hitch on the old Red Bull jetski, drive to London, have a couple of meetings in the ‘big smoke’, pick up the brand new RB Kawasaki ski… it looks like a beast of a weapon (see pic, left!). And then I headed north.
On my way up, after about 10 hours on the road, I was getting tired coming up to Inverness, then looked out the window in the fading light and simultaneously saw some inviting-looking snow on the hills and a sign for Aviemore – Scotland’s premier snow resort… 12 hours and a good night’s sleep later, I was on the mountain laying down some crazy turns and huge airs on the snow… OK, OK, so I was doing some sliding and hopping. But it was really fun – a great interlude.
Thurso… the contest is on! We have had a great couple of days of small, clean waves in tropical sunshine at Brimms Ness. I managed to get through my heat yesterday in the dying moments – lucked into a 7.5 right at the end! So stoked! I even managed to squeeze in a quick 18 holes up at Thurso Golf Club, including a birdie! What… you don’t believe me? Well, just check out the video blogs at www.oneill.com/cwc/scotland/videos/ and hit the ‘behind the scenes’ tab… Proof!
Hope to catch you all soon, keep an eye on the webcast – waves are coming – some serious shit is about to go down… Take care…
All the best
Sam
