Since he became Formula One world champion Sebastian Vettel has hardly had a moment to himself: after an end-of-season celebration in Abu Dhabi, he was straight on a private plane to Salzburg Airport in Austria to party with Red Bull at Hangar-7. Then back to the UAE for tyre testing before returning to Heppenheim, Germany, to meet F1 fans in his hometown. We catch up with his latest blog...
'My trip home on Sunday was amazing. I was expecting a few people would come to celebrate my title with me, but I would have never thought that it would be so many.
The drop in temperature from Abu Dhabi was a bit of a surprise but I’d happily endure the cold any time if it meant I could spend the time with such great people as I met in my hometown.
After all the travelling it was great to finally come home and see all the people I’ve been missing. I have to admit that it was a bit confusing to wake up and not know if I was in Abu Dhabi, London, Salzburg or Heppenheim. But I have to say, home never felt better.
In fact, the two days we had spent testing in Abu Dhabi before flying to Germany were actually pretty relaxing. Firstly because I really enjoyed being back in the car again – it kind of eased me down – and secondly, it was just fun to spend time with my mechanics when we could relax.
The tyre tests were really good but we know that both, Pirelli and ourselves need some time to get it right.
Right now I'm in Cartagena in Spain, where I’m spending some time with the Formula BMW rookies. Formula BMW is the first step for every driver graduating from karting into formula motorsport. I was the highest-placed rookie in 2003 and overall champion in 2004.
Driving in my old car was just pure fun and I can't tell you how much I enjoyed it. I just felt like a kid again that cruises around without any stress or pressure. And that's exactly what kids who want to get into sports need to keep in mind: If you do something that you love and enjoy, it will give you the extra percent of effort you need.
After Spain I'll head back to Germany for the Race of Champions and defend the Nations Cup together with Michael Schumacher. From Germany we'll fly back to the factory in Milton Keynes to meet up with the team. So, I guess you can see, it doesn't matter if the season's on a break – we’re not.'
