Multiple world enduro champion David Knight has been awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list.
The Isle of Man rider has received the honour for services to motorcycling and will make the trip to Buckingham Palace in due course to pick up his medal and officially become a ‘Member of the Order of the British Empire’.
Knighter is joined on the latest list of honoured sportsmen and women by fellow Manx resident and champion cyclist Mark Cavendish (MBE), as well as golfer Lee Westwood (OBE), England cricketers Andrew Strauss (OBE) and Alastair Cook (MBE), Olympic heptathlete Jessica Ennis (MBE) and triple-jumper Phillips Idowu (MBE), and British NBA basketball star John Amaechi.
It’s a timely boost to Knight, who admitted on Manx Radio that he was “shell-shocked” by the award, as he prepares to undergo a second hip operation to repair damage caused by a crash on his KTM in the Enduro E3 World Championship rounds in Spain back in April, with the 33-year-old earmarking mid-August to make a competitive return to action.
“I can finally announce today that I am being awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours!” said Knight via his Twitter feed on Saturday. “Thanks to all my supporters.”
