Stuart Broad took the final wicket of an astonishing Test as England thumped the world’s best team India by 319 runs in Nottingham.

With England having struggled to 128–9 in the first innings, it was Broad who impressed with the bat to score a valuable 64 on a difficult batting surface, complemented by Graeme Swann’s useful 28, as the home side eventually reached 221.

Then Broad’s 6–46 was the pick of the bowling as India replied with 288 in their first innings.

In England’s second innings, controversy reigned as Ian Bell walked off for tea yesterday, not realising that Eoin Morgan’s ‘boundary’ had been saved by fielder Praveen Kumar, and he was technically run out, though India sportingly allowed him to be reinstated after captain Andrew Strauss and coach Andy Flower visited the Indian dressing room during the interval.

Bell later apologised and admitted he had been “naïve”. But his eventual 159 and England’s 544 all out – helped again by Broad, who scored 44 runs from 32 balls, including five fours and two sixes – ensured the visitors had an uphill task to level the series at 1–1.

Tim Bresnan proved the inspiration in England’s bowling line-up second time around with 5–48, while Anderson took 3–51. Broad took 2–30, including the final wicket of Sreesanth for 0.

England now take a 2–0 series lead to Edgbaston next week.
