Eagle-eyed viewers might have noticed Mr David Coulthard making a cheeky appearance on BBC TV show Richard Hammond’s Engineering Connections this week.

So low-key was the appearance in the Red Bull Racing RB6 that DC didn’t actually get a name-drop from Top Gear’s Hammond, though the familiar blue and white cross of St Andrew on the helmet indicated that it was the 13-time grand prix-winning former RBR driver and now Red Bull team ambassador (as well as co-commentator on BBC TV for F1) behind the wheel.

It’s not the first time there’s been such a Top Gear connection – DC appeared in a previous edition of the show, using a 2005 Red Bull Racing car to paint a canvas held by Jeremy Clarkson. (“I’ve done some weird things in my life,” he said at the time, “but this is up there.”)

This time, the Red Bull man-and-machine pairing sped around Silverstone while the Hamster, standing trackside, discussed the many origins (including swords, sailing boats and 19th-century cannons!) and developments over the years that have made Formula One cars what they are today in the field of precision engineering.

And of course, the Adrian Newey-penned RB6, in the hands of F1 world champion Sebastian Vettel and team-mate Mark Webber, was the cream of the crop last year as the pair took Red Bull’s maiden F1 Constructors’ crown.

If you missed Richard Hammond’s Engineering Connections, you can still enjoy seeing the RB6 in all its glory on BBC iPlayer until June 19.
