Round 16 of the MotoGP World Championship sees us pull into Phillip Island for the Australian Grand Prix. The first races on Phillip Island took place in 1926 with the running of the 100 Miles Road Race. As speeds grew over the years so did the need for a safer circuit. The original Phillip Island road circuit which survived until 1935, was based around the airfield, and was a dusty trek up and down hills and through tough tight corners. In 1951, a group of six local businessmen decided to build a new track, about 2 km away, the new track still bears the corner name signs of the original circuit.
Requiring much maintenance the circuit sadly and slowly declined through the 1970s, it was farmed by its owners while closed and was then sold in 1985 in preparation for reopening, but did not do so until 1989 when a long term lease and rebuild agreement was signed. In 2006 and 2007, Phillip Island hosted the grand finale of the V8Supercars Championship Series, as well as a regular MotoGP and Superbike. A multi-million dollar re-development was done in late 2006, leaving the grand old icon of Australian motorcycle racing as up-to-date as she's ever been.
