The first ever Red Bull Rapids took place on Sunday 25th September at the National Watersports Centre, Holme Pierrpoint, Nottingam. The competition challenged the clever and courageous to design and build their very own home made boat. 24 crews piloted crafts ranging from a lego inspired boat to a giant rubber duck down 500metres of grade 3 rapids.
The crazy crews had to impress with their creativity, showmanship and speed as they had to navigate themselves through the tumultuous waters. Nottinghamshire and England cricketer Stuart Broad was amongst the judges and said, “The Red Bull Rapids day has been fantastic, you can see the enjoyment that everybody has had. The excitement that the competitors got is great and you have to be impressed by the effort they have put in.”
Following a close run battle, Water Wars from North Yorkshire ran out eventual winners with their German U-boat designed craft. After winning a once in a lifetime white water rafting experience with one of Red Bull’s international kayaking athletes, team captain Will Turner said, “We didn’t think we were going to win, there were so many good entries, we were just fortunate we were able to get down the rapids in one piece!”
