About Sam
When you think of UK surfing, you think of Cornwall – spiritual heartland and breeding ground for the stars. This is why it’s a bit odd that Britain’s best wave rider hails from the comparative backwater of Newcastle. At the age of 10, he started out surfing waves at the area’s then ‘filthy and disgusting’ Black Middens, using a board shaped by a local butcher. Building on an obsession with watching Kelly Slater videos, it led Sam to splitting his time between university and developing an ‘old school’ style and attitude that’s kept him at the forefront of the European scene for some years now. These days Sam’s a little busier than usual with the arrival of his son, Huxley. Sam still competes on many of the European and WQS contests, and is working with Red Bull on the Break 5 surf festival.
