After 36 WC titles Björn Dunkerbeck is hoarding almost as much precious metal as the Swiss National Bank. But it’s still not enough for him. In Greece he picked up European Speed Championships gold.
Moving with extremely high speed makes people younger than when they started – says Einstein. With Björn Dunkerbeck that’s definitively the case. The 39-year-old surf legend, who recently started specializing in speed contests, is running rings around much younger rivals – after 36 WC titles and more than100 PWA race victories. Dunkerbeck, born in Danmark and sailing under the number SUI-11, surfed to his most recent title on August 26.Lead change on the last race day
In Karpathos, Greece, “Dunki” was crowned European Speed Champion. With a top speed of 42.92 knots (about 80 km/h) he even managed to over-sprint his arch rival Antoine Albeau, 36: The Frenchman was leading the discipline right up to the last racing day, but finally had to concede defeat to Dunkerbeck’s more consistent performance.
Next goal: world speed record
Dunki can use his success against Albeau as tail wind for his biggest goal – breaking the 50-knots barrier over 500 meters. The world record he has to break is currently 49.09 knots (90.91 km/h), and was posted in March – by a certain Antoine Albeau.
